Red Rake – Wed 8 Apr 2026

Early Wed eve several members of the group gathered at the lay-bye on Hassop road. We donned kit and headed for the entrance, quickly found by Chris. It’s a bit flooded so we made a half hearted attempt at lowering the level – futile – pick axe required!

The wading entrance tunnel, lovely arched roof, soon descends to a crawl along some planks, a final section is flat out. Fortunately not flooded. We then spent a couple of hours traversing the classic large fault workings. We went up a few times and down a few times. All of the ropes are in situ but showing signs of deterioration. Some metal work is also very corroded. We changed one rope at the far end then set off to return. Lots of very loose boulders so caution was the watch word. Fortunately there plenty of places to stay safe.

The final part of the trip is along a flooded passage, complete with a rubber ring ferry. Very novel in a Peak District Mine.

We exited around 9pm, got changed and headed for the pub in Culver.

Attendees: Chis, Nathan, Freya, Wendy, Francess, Michal and Mike.
